Ian is a researcher working across a range of social science disciplines, including development studies, education, and peace and conflict studies. His principal research interests relate to the politics and social dynamics of institutions involved in education and knowledge production. 

His previous research focussed on the social role and functioning of universities in post-war contexts and the ways in which these universities had embodied experiences of crisis and conflict.
